Episode 13: How does a Kenyan solve the problem of Location Services from Germany?
In 2012, Steve Odhiambo wanted to a send a book to his sister who was living with his mother in Kenya. However, he wasn’t able to do so because his mother did not pay the subscription fees to use the postal service. Frustrated by the situation, Steve took it upon himself to create a company to solve this problem.
Starting with an idea to create a technology enabled location base services in Kenya, Steve started reading books about founders and attending event as a student while in Germany to learn more about startups.
Today, Steve is the founder of Ukowapi (www.uko-wapi.com), a tech startup that specializes on location base services in Kenya and Sub Sahara Africa that make sure that anyone like his mother can receive packages at home no matter where they live. Steve has raised over $100,000 to take his company from prototype to product and has won multiple awards including the European Satellite Navigation Competition in 2014.
In this episode, we touched on how Steve started his company from idea to business, the challenges of running his company from Germany given that his users and customers are all based in Kenya, and what he learned from chasing investors with just an idea.
